ESTHETICIAN Question RE: SKINCARE TREATMENTS - DO TOO MANY CAUSE SAGGING/DAMAGE?

Here is a question I got from a subscriber/customer who has some interest in the RF microneedling and generally all of the procedures we get that cause “trauma” in the hopes of deeper repair/tightening of the skin. I thought I’d share it:

Hi Karen!

I continue to enjoy you videos & learn so much from your postings so thank you!

I have a question for you from an expert esthetician’s perspective.

Lately I’ve been seeing skincare mfg’s & many esthetician’s are talking more about doing away with the old school of thought that causing trauma to the skin can do all theses great things like promoting collagen etc.. contradictory to that some procedures can actually be causing more setbacks than doing good, primarily when it comes to creating “inflammation” within the skin top layer & or deeper. Potentially causing more eventual sagging  😳

My reason for reaching out is to see how you feel about RF micro needling Vivace treatments. Here is a link if you’re not familiar with them, they are intense.

Kind regards,

Diane

——MY RESPONSE——

Thanks for your nice comments and order!

Great question:

I do know about Vivace and other forms of that treatment. My thoughts are that it can be both good and bad:

Pros –

-Working deep in the layers of skin, it can help to cause micro-scars and as they heal, help somewhat tighten the skin

-Microneedling is excellent and I’ve seen great results with it – using a roller or pen/not RF

Cons-

-I have seen damage and volume loss happen with RF treatments. They can be very harmful if not done by a very skilled practitioner!

-Pain – the pain factor with RF is significant. I had some RF done many years ago and while it did provide some help, I said never again. (Just me!) I think there are other treatments I personally like better.

-Cost – very high compared to results. This is JUST MY OPINION based on what I know and have seen.

Overall, I avoid RF as I do know aging/mature faces usually need to add volume and RF can cause volume loss. While it can tighten (necks might be a good fit for this), I would keep it off the face or use it only in small target areas.

I do think causing some “trauma” is a good thing, but it should be minimal vs. often. Too much, too often can cause reverse effects. For example, if you do a deep microneedling once month= good results. Don’t also do lasers, RF, and other treatments that cause trauma in the same time frame = too much!

Hope that all makes sense!

SINKER or SAGGER?

How to choose what products and devices are best for you based on your own needs.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:

HOW OFTEN TO USE AT HOME SKINCARE DEVICES:

Overall, I think it’s better to do something vs. nothing in the anti-aging arena. However, I do think it’s possible to do too much, too often.

More is not better.

My suggestion is to choose one or two home devices and skincare that work for your targeted needs (wrinkles/lines, volume loss, plumping, brightening/sun damage, etc.)

Then once every six months, if you can, have a more intense treatment performed. It can be a deeper microneedling (best done monthly) or a laser resurfacing or tightening/brightening (6 months).

If you do consistent treatments, either DIY or in-office, and keep them on as-needed schedule, you should be fine.

RF is not something to do often, or if you cannot accept any potential volume loss.

Don’t over-use home devices, either. You can use them as directed, but don’t try to game the system and do more. It’s not necessarily the best thing and could have counter-productive results.

-Two times weekly with Time Master Pro. I actually do this weekly plus a treatment before date night with my hubby, events, etc. I don’t over use it powerful device.

-Three times weekly with microcurrent. I use the microcurrent weekly for a long session and then do quick touch-ups as needed (before events, etc.) Training your muscles with a long session at least once weekly (twice for newbies) will help your muscles retain memory and then you can do quickies when you need to pump up the muscles (get a quick lift)!
