Best Skincare Under a Face Mask

Masks are now a part of our daily life and while we all hope this doesn’t last, it’s best to figure out how to navigate life with them.

Our faces are covered, but does this mean we need to change our skincare routines?

  • Is sunscreen still necessary?

  • Do face masks cause breakouts?

  • How to do “beauty” with a face mask.

  • Why you might consider a different skincare routine

SHOULD YOU WEAR SUNSCREEN WITH A FACE MASK?

Yes, sunscreen is still necessary! While most of our face is covered, there is still the potential that the mask comes off/on, it moves around, you pull it down to drink your coffee, etc., etc.

If you are outside, wear sunscreen. Period.

You may wish to fine an oil-free version. This can help reduce oil slicks and break outs that are being caused by wearing face masks.

3 Ways You Can Reduce Breakouts from Wearing a Face Mask:

Breakouts are triggering more now, especially for those who have problematic/sensitive skin. This can be either acne or just a flare up of redness, irritation and rosacea.

The best ways to keep these problems at bay:

  1. Make sure your skin is clean. Wash when you come in from outside and if you are experiencing a break out, use only minimal products/makeup. Try to avoid anything with extra oil (oil-free is best). Use a deep-cleaning device and gel/oil-free cleanser.

  2. Be sure your face masks are washed daily (if cloth) or disposed of (if disposable). It’s tempting to re-use them, but this can lead to not only breakouts and flare-ups, but it’s not helping you avoid the transmission of fluids and germs!

  3. Best products for reducing breakouts include anything formulated for reducing acne, oil-free versions of skin care and products/makeup as well as avoiding anything heavy/creamy.

  4. Light serums are ideal for use vs. heavier creams or layered skincare. Use heavier formulations at night and lighter, oil-free and serum-type solutions during the day. 5. Use a balanced face wash, light moisturizer/sunscreen without oil and then your makeup. Generally, a mineral-based makeup dusted over a light tinted BB or CC cream would be best.

LIGHTEN UP DURING THE DAY:

  • Avoid heavy creams and lots of layers of products during the day.

  • These can “gunk up” the pore and make your face oilier = more breakouts.

  • If you need extra moisture over sunscreen / under makeup, switch to an oil-free version.

  • Use your heavier formulations and creams at night.

  • Use a deep cleaning every few days, like this Powder Wash.
